My Mother’s Shawl

Kriti Singh, Sarah Aldama

May 20

Piece by Kriti Singh. Image titled “Red Trail” by Sarah Aldama.

Enamoured by the sequins

On her scarlet shawl

I watch my mother as she unfolds it, keenly

And as she does

The soft kashmiri shawl rolls onto her wrist

Carelessly, like the gurgling river

Running into wherever the course takes

And now, the shimmering lush

Drapes her neck, resting on her shoulders,

Making its way, dangling, towards her waist

She smiles, I smile back.
